Emerging Leader Development: Coaching vs.Training

A bottleneck many growing companies face in the current economy is attracting proven and effective leaders to facilitate and manage profitable growth. These proven leaders command premium salaries and bonuses assuming you can even get their attention.

There are times that the answer to a problem is literally sitting right in front of us. You may already have an emerging leader in your organization that may not yet be ready to take on a full leadership role but with some guidance and development they could be awesome in a relatively short amount of time.

So how can you get your emerging leader up to speed? One option is to send them to an intensive leadership program for a few days or a week and get them to drink from a fire hose. What we have all experienced from this type of training is that we will retain ten to twenty percent of the information we learned and will probably go back to our own habits because it is the easy thing to do when you are busy.

Another option that has been trending in recent years is Leadership Coaching. This method has proven to be much more effective than the traditional fire hose method because it involves the emerging leader to meet with a training facilitator on a one to one basis ranging from weekly to monthly over a longer period allowing the participant to slowly absorb concepts and knowledge and practice their new skills on the job. Any challenges in implementing the new skills can be discussed at the development meetings with appropriate adjustments made.

The leadership coaching method can condense a five-year process of trial and error before an emerging leader can be considered “seasoned” to as little as one year.

There are many advantages to developing leaders from within. A couple advantages that come to mind immediately are that they are already part of your corporate culture making them an immediate fit and they will often command significantly less compensation allowing the company to stay on budget.

With some advanced planning by implementing an emerging leader’s development program now you can have your emerging leader ready to take your business to the next level sooner than later.
